Carl Woodrow was born in the latter half of the eighteenth
century in a small cave in Romania. Raised by a family of squirrels, he
eventually left the family tree to pursue a career in turnip growing where he
discovered he had some small skill in painting tiny objects. Today Carl lives in
deepest darkest middle England where he raises Siberian Hamsters and works as a
stress tester for a cocktail umbrella manufacturer. During the evening he still
paints miniatures by candle-light in a darkened dungeon under the garden shed.
In the beginning...there was
not much light
What is Dropship? For want of a better description, Dropship
is simply a random diary of my own pursuits from over twenty years as a
hobbyist. When I first ventured onto the Internet seven years ago with my
fledgling website 'Geneseed' I had the rather grandiose idea that I would create
the be all and end all of Epic Fan sites. Suffice to say, other than a great
deal of enjoyment playing around with animated menu's and spinning graphics, it
never amounted to much in the way of actual quality content. nevertheless, not
to be deterred I persevered.
Dropship
Having survived over five years online, Dropship has changed
greatly from the website I began back in '97 to what you see today. It doesn't
boast to be the biggest in content, or the 'ultimate source of Epic material'
(as many fan sites often claim but rarely deliver), but what it is, is a true
reflection of my own pursuits and interests in the hobby; no more and certainly
no less. Over the past seven years I have heard from many enthusiasts over the
world and that alone is reason enough to continue Dropship for many more years
to come. Many have been the inspiration behind my own painting and conversions
and I'd like to hope my efforts have been in some way a useful inspiration to
others.
Is there a grand plan?
I am often asked this question and whether or not I work to
any kind of planned schedule. The honest answer is both yes and no. I do
generally have an idea and a list of what I 'would like' to include on the site
if I had enough time and wherever possible I try to stick to that. The nature of
the hobby however means my interests (and time) vary greatly, which, although
not a bad thing does make it damned awkward to predict what I will be working on
from one day to the next. The other slight fly in the ointment is whether or not
I have any deadline sensitive commitments; such as tournament armies or writing
commissions. That said, it does mean the content will if nothing else be
hopefully surprising.
What you won't find
When I first began Dropship I made a conscious decision not
to include two things; either excerpts from Rules Books or reams of unit
statistics. There is a simple reason for this, that being it adds absolutely
nothing new to the hobby that you can't get from buying your own copies of the
relevant Games Workshop publications. My goal above everything else is to
support the hobby with 'new' content, not simply plagiarise published material
for the benefit of freeloaders who won't pony up the cash to buy their own
copies like the rest of us honest gamers do. There are sadly more than enough
websites out there that already do this, I do not intend to add another one to
that list. In other words, please don't email me asking for copies of rules or
unit stats as I'm afraid I will simply ignore them.
What if I have further questions about an article?
If there is something that interests you, or even just that
you want to know how I painted a certain model, by all means email me. I can't
promise that I will answer every email immediately as what little spare time I
have outside of work and family commitments is generally seized upon to actually
paint something. I do try however to answer as many emails as possible so if you
don't hear from me after a week or so, please try again, I will generally spot
it and make an effort to reply.
Avast ye scurvy lot!
No ship sails with out a crew and even though Dropship is
more like a two man lifeboat than a liner, in no small measure do I owe thanks
to the following folks for their much appreciated involvement and assistance
over the years.
Dave "Gaunt" Stone - Regular gaming opponent, sculptor and
general ideas factory.
Jervis Johnson - Head Fanatic and the man behind not only
designing some of the best Specialist Games out there, but ensuring that the
support they richly deserve is continued.
Will Hayes - Forge World Designer - Not only daft enough to
whittle a six part Epic scale Space Marine out of a plastic rod, but talented
enough to actually do it!
Everyone who contributed to Dropship in the early days, you
all know who you are and you have my thanks.
Regards, Carl Woodrow, Dropship author.
