INTRODUCTION
Although a host of new models are being released for the three
armies featured in Epic Armageddon, the bulk of forces will
still be drawn from the already excellent range that was created
for the last edition. With that in mind there is no reason not
to your existing forces in the new version, or even
begin additional formations if you already have a collection of
Imperial or Ork models sat around waiting to be assembled and
painted. If you are new to Epic then don't worry, all of the
models you need to play will be released throughout the year.
Raised
on Armageddon itself, the Steel Legion are famous for the large
number of armoured vehicles at their disposal, in particular the
Chimera transport. Produced by Armageddon Forge factories, The
Chimera is the principal armoured transport of the Steel Legion
Regiments and provide them with an unparalleled number of
Armoured Fist Platoons. As I have already produced a Steel Legion Mechanised Company,
I thought I would focus on providing them with some serious fire
support in the form of a full artillery company. Sticking with
the Steel Legion I painted nine Basilisk and a single Command
Salamander to match the infantry and transports I painted
earlier. The markings on the lead vehicles identify them as part
of the 3rd Company.
Although
the Steel Legion are one of the most infamous Imperial Guard
Regiments on Armageddon, they are far from the only one.
Literally dozens of Regiments were raised to counter
Ghazghkull's invasion, including the Jopal Indentured and
Elysian Drop Troops to name but two. One such regiment was the
Krieg Death Korps, specialists in lengthy trench warfare with
their mobile artillery and siege troops. Very similar in uniform
to the Steel Legion, Krieg infantry companies make extensive use
of ancient artillery pieces such as the Thudd gun and Rapier
laser. As I wanted to include these in my Krieg formations I
assembled a few test pieces. With predominately dark brown great
coats and olive coloured helmets they are a nice contrast to the
lighter coloured Steel Legion.
Compared
to the drab colours of the Imperial Guard, the Orks are a
completely different thing altogether with their garishly
painted vehicles and Gargants. Stompas in particular are one of
the Orks more unusual units being neither large enough to be
considered a Gargant sized war engine, nor fast enough to be one
of the Orks many armoured vehicles. Within Epic Armageddon,
these units can be grouped together as 'Stompa Mobs' providing
even more firepower to what are generally pretty massive
formations of infantry and armoured vehicles. This particular
Stompa I painted in the more common Goff Clan colours as just
one in a mob of three. The two other more heavily armed Stompa's
also display the glyphs and banners of the clans Warboss. Adding
glyphs and icons to larger models like the Stompa and Gargants
is a good way of adding even more character.
Recently
released by Forge World (at the time of writing) are a
new range of Ork Gunwagons based on their larger Warhammer
40,000 versions. Beautifully designed and detailed by Brian
Fawcett, these were perfect for adding into my Ork forces as
part of my 'Blitz Brigades'. All were painted to match their 40K
counterparts in bright colours over grimy armoured plates and
rivets. Again glyphs were added to the front and sides of the
vehicles in small quantities to create more detail without
overcrowding the look of the model.
Hopefully this should give a flavour of what sort of armies
and units you would expect to find in a game of Epic, however
this is just the tip of the iceberg as there are many more units
and races yet to come, all of which will be featured here at
some stage. To browse the armies in more detail follow the links
at the top of the page for the first two 'Books', Armies of the
Imperium and the forces of Ghazghkull. Enjoy.
