I chose the Salamander Chapter as the first
marine army to do for Armageddon for two reasons, firstly I had
done the Ultramarines and Blood Angels to death over the years
and really didn't fancy doing them again. Secondly because
the green and black colour scheme really appealed to me, not
being one I had done in Epic before and as they were the primary
force featured on Armageddon it seemed appropriate to pair them
up with the Steel Legion I began earlier. Points wise, Space
Marines are costly and their detachments sizes are small in
comparison to say the Guard or Orks. This is a reflection of
their toughness and abilities in combat being one of the
all-round hardest forces to suppress or break in games of Epic.
The force I assembled is deliberately small
as I wanted to use it in selected scenarios and as an allied
force to other Imperial Guard units, so I focused on a handful
of core detachments initially, to which I would add more later
fleshing the Salamanders out into a full army at a later date.
At the centre are two basic Tactical Detachments consisting of
six units of Space marines and three Rhino transports each. I
purposefully chose two detachments as they also conveniently
could be delivered by a single Landing Craft making the force
highly flexible in deployment. Backing them up I took a Land
Raider squadron and four units of accompanying Terminators as
well as a Bike squadron with two upgraded Attack Bikes and a
pair of Thunderhawks to escort the Landing Craft in and provide
a second delivery opportunity for the Terminators.
Other units currently being bolted onto the
force include a Devastator detachment, Razorback transports for
them and three Dreadnoughts to take care of any opportunistic
assaults. Apart from the Land Raiders the force is a little
light on armour so I added some Whirlwinds and a single Predator
late on which I will fill out into a full Predator Squadron
along with some Vindicators once I have completed painting them.
As I had plans for some other Navy support
for a second Guard army, I opted not to give the Salamanders any
additional assets from fleet and instead let the Thunderhawks
take care of themselves. As one final addition I included a
single Warlord Titan which not only seriously bumped up the
points tally but also kept in step with my plan to ensure every
army has at least one Titan featured. Well, it is Epic after
all.
