Epic Hellbore Tunneller

When I was sorting out some bits boxes over the weekend, I unearthed (no pun intended) an Imperial Hellbore, which was a distinct blast from the past. I am not a particular fan of any of the old tunnellers such as the Hellbore, Mole or Termites, but I thought it might be worth painting up if for nothing else a bit of nostalgia.

Once I'd found where I'd hidden my sets of the hideous plastic tracks, which are no longer available I'm afraid, I stuck it together and gave it an undercoat of black primer. The Hellbore can be assembled with the launch ramp either raised or lowered, but as I can't see me really using this in any games other than a static piece I left it in the lowered position. The model really consists of two parts; the main transporter and launch unit and the Hellbore itself. I decided to paint them in two completely different schemes to emphasise the difference between the units; the Hellbore being a priceless treasured relic of the Adeptus Mechanicus and the transporter being more of an Imperial utilitary vehicle that simply has the honour of transporting and deploying the massive artefact.

The transporter was painted in a similar grey green scheme to one of my Imperial Guard armies as it made it look more subdued compared to the brightly painted Hellbore. The Hellbore unit was given a wash of tin bitz, scorched brown and beaten copper over the drill-head and rear power plant to give it the well oiled look of ancient metal.

This was then given a wash of watered down black ink and when dry lightly drybrushed with boltgun metal and highlighted with chainmail to pick out damaged nicks and dents in the drill head.

The main hull was painted with a mix of scab red and blood red and highlighted by adding gradual amounts of blazing orange to the mix.

The ornate collars, door seals and pipes were all painted brazen brass and given a brown ink wash before being highlighted with a little beaten copper mixed with chainmail.

To finish it off the stylised imperial eagle on the main hatch was painted shadow grey and highlighted with ghostly grey. Funnily enough now that I have painted it I don't actually dislike the Hellbore as much as I did before hand and may even dig out my Mole and Termites (the Hellbore's smaller brethren) to give them a similar treatment. The model is not entirely finished yet as there is still some detail to paint, such as the windows in the drive cab and ornate trim around the front, but that will be for another day.

Until next time, happy gaming.
