Basing vehicles can be a great way of not only co-ordinating the look of the whole army, but help preserve their paintwork. It's not an essential part of collecting an army so if you don't like the idea then fear not, nobody will get upset if you don't base everything. Its all about choice you know.

TO BASE, OR NOT TO BASE, THAT IS THE QUESTION?

Since I began on the Epic Armageddon project I was surprised to discover that if there was one question I got asked more than any other, it is “why have you all started basing your vehicles?”. Simply put, I have no idea who started it, but once I realised the Warmaster bases were an exact multiple of the Epic Infantry strips dimension wise, it seemed logical to use them for vehicles, heavy weapons and bikes or such like. Basing everything in an Epic army is not going to be everybody’s cup of tea, however before you completely discard it consider this. In all the years I have played Epic, it is the vehicles that take both the most punishment on the table and in turn do the most damage to the gaming surface. As I spend quite a lot of effort on both the painting of my Epic armies and my gaming boards, it is natural that I want to keep them in good order. Basing the vehicles protects not only the models themselves, but also my tables. They also look a lot better in my opinion when photographed too, but that’s just my preference.

If you do decide to base your vehicles you can take it a stage further by matching the textures and colours on the base to your gaming boards. Personally I use a variety of boards so I prefer to keep all my bases neutral earthy colours, likewise the infanty. For most of the armies you will see featured on Dropship the base colours are a dry brush of graveyard earth followed by a dry brush of bleached bone. This can of course be varied to any colours you think better suit the board and/or model, codex and fortress grey for example for urban boards.

The other benefit to basing your vehicles is when you are not gaming with them they can look very striking on display, allowing a wealth of additional terrain details to be added to the bases making them more interesting. At the end of the day it is 100% down to aesthetics and personal choice; some will like the idea, others loathe it. There is no right or wrong to basing vehicles in Epic so just do what you prefer, it is your army after all and no matter what anyone else says its what 'you' think that's important.

Happy gaming.
